Established 1894 by John Henry Kirby as sawmill town with deep ties to railroad industries. Today, the principal commercial center in Hardin County located at the edge of the Piney Woods region, about 15 miles northeast of the Port of Beaumont and within driving distance of the Houston metropolitan area.

Annual events include Dulcimer Festival, Crusin' Silsbee, Christmas in the Big Thicket Festival, fireworks displays on New Years and Independence Day.
