150th Anniversary Juneteenth Celebration

The island hosts several days of festivities to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Juneteenth, which originated in this historic beach city. This year’s festivities include a variety of events, such as festivals, picnics, African-American heritage exhibits, re-enactments and concerts. The annual reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in front of the official Juneteenth monument is June 19 to mark that date in 1865 when the last slaves were freed in the South.
