This is home to one of the last populations of the endangered Attwater's prairie-chicken, a ground-dwelling grouse of the coastal prairie. A five-mile auto tour and two hiking trails offer pathways into the prairie and along Coushatta creek. The Attwater Prairie Chicken Festival is held in April. Monthly guided tours are available.

Trails open daily, sunrise to sunset. Visitor Center is open 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Mon.-Fri. A two-hour guided van tour of the refuge on the first Saturday of the month. Reservations required.
