Norman Rockwell Behind the Camera

A natural storyteller, Norman Rockwell envisioned his scenarios down to the smallest detail and commissioned thousands of photographs as studies for his iconic images. When Rockwell adopted photography in the late 1930s as part of his working process, he called on friends and neighbors to bring new flesh-and-blood realism to his work. Their cooperative enthusiasm and unassuming tolerance for his demands enabled the artist to capture nuances more spontaneous than any professional model could deliver. McNay Art Museum, 6000 N.
