Learn about the 17 historic sites of San Elizario; about the arrival of Don Juan de Onate to the area in 1598 and the First Thanksgiving Celebration; the Presidio de San Elizario and the San Elcear Chapel on the Mission Trail. Also hear about the Apache Peace Camp, the visit by infamous William H Bonney (Billy the Kid) and the long remembered Salt War of 1877. You'll also get to visit the the Veterans Memorial Museum and the Veterans Walk, as well as stroll the original Camino Real.
Free tours of this nationally recognized historic district are conducted on the fourth Sunday of each month. Tours begin at noon and 3 p.m. and last approximately 1.5 hours. Participants are asked to gather at the Main Street Mercantile 15 minutes before the tour.
