In southern Hidalgo County, the town was named for Alamo Land and Sugar Co. Called the "Land of Two Summers," Alamo features an abundance of vegetables and citrus, and it is a winter resort/retirement area. It is one of the Rio Grande Valley's gateways to Mexico, via U.S. 281 to Nuevo Progreso.
