Established as Camp Henderson, the town was once a stop on the Chisholm Trail. In 1867, the community's name changed to honor Confederate Gen. Pat Cleburne. The city's growth was tied to the railroad, and historic locomotive No. 3417 is on display in Hulen Park. The historic downtown district offers eateries and shopping. Events include Antique Alley and Yard Sale in April and September, the Cleburne Wine and Art Festival in September, Pioneer Days in November and Whistle Stop Christmas festivities.
