Spanish explorer Alonso Alvarez de Pineda in 1519 is believed to be the first European to visit the area. The Corpus Christi Seawall was built in the late 1930s, creating Shoreline Boulevard and the popular "T" head docks. North Beach offers park areas with picnic facilities. From the Corpus Christi Marina watch the colorful sailboat regatta Wednesday evenings, and enjoy the weekly Farmer's Market at the nearby Art Center of Corpus Christi. Tejano music star, Selena, called Corpus Christi home. Institutions of higher learning are Del Mar College and Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi. Free fishing is available from municipal piers, jetties, miles of beaches and the seawall. A Texas fishing permit is required. Arrangements and reservations for group-boat fishing and charters may be made through private operators.
