Mexican cowboys who brought cattle herds to the railhead called the site el campo, the countryside. Historical murals painted on buildings throughout town depict the city's history. The area is known for waterfowl hunting and fishing. The city has a variety of restaurants and is famous for its barbecue. El Campo celebrates its heritage with the Prairie Days Festival in October.
