This historic town is a popular Hill Country destination, noted for its peaches and grapes. The town was settled by German immigrants. Many of the historic structures are traditional German and frontier styles, and they are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Fredericksburg is the birthplace of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Fleet in World War II.
Old World customs observed include Schuetzenfest (marksmanship tournaments), Oktoberfest, Zweite Weihnachten, Kinderfest and volkssporting. The calendar includes arts and cultural events, wine and food festivals, sports, July 4th celebrations, the Gillespie County Fair, Christmas traditions and Fredericksburg Trade Days.
