At the center of Hale County, this town resulted from the compromise of two rival villages, Hale City and Epworth, that united in 1893. Buildings from both were moved to new town site. The town became center of intensive farming as irrigation developed in 20th century. In the county, irrigated acres produce cotton, grain sorghum, wheat, sunflowers, sugar beets and other vegetables.

Ten outdoor murals on buildings throughout the city, historically depict life in Hale Center.
