The town is a gateway to the immense Toledo Bend Reservoir (see CENTER) and is part of the National Historic El Camino Real trail. The Gaines-Oliphant House is one of the oldest Anglo structures in Texas. The county jail on the square still has gallows in place.

The Great East Texas Outdoor Fest is held in March (getof.net). Other events include the Milam Settlers Day in November and The Lions Club Christmas Parade and Lighting of the Courthouse Square in December.
