Honey Grove was a settlement dating from the days of the Republic of Texas. Legend says that when first coming to Texas, David Crockett camped here and later wrote to friend, Samuel Erwin, describing the beautiful "honey grove." Erwin settled here in 1842 and named the town.

Driving tour maps of the city's many restored Victorian homes are available at the library. City Hall, a block north of the library, was built in 1887.
