The town was named for settler Friedrich Ernst's industriousness. It has been designated as the "Oldest German Town in Texas" by the Legislature.

Ernst Memorial Park features the restored Republic of Texas post office and town store. Other historical sites include the Welcome Hall at 9021 F.M. 109 and the Old Methodist Church at 1914 Main St. For tours and information, contact Industry Historical Society (979/357-2772).
