Lajitas (La-HEE-tahs) is at the western edge of Big Bend National Park. It became a village in 1915 when an Army post was established to protect the area from Mexican bandit Francisco (Pancho) Villa. Today, it features a modern resort with a golf course, river rafting, swimming pools, horseback riding, restaurant, shopping and stargazing (877/525-4827, www.lajitasgolfresort.com).
