This town was named for the fresnos (ash) trees scattered in the woods and along streams. An early landowner developed a canal system, and today the city is surrounded by farm and ranch land.

Los Ebanos Preserve offers wildlife viewing opportunities in a private nature park. By appointment only (956/399-9097, www.losebanospreserve.com).
