Madisonville is designated as "The Mushroom Capital of Texas" by the Legislature for the 400,000 pounds of fresh mushrooms produced weekly at Monterey Mushrooms Inc. The Texas Mushroom Festival is held in October. The Madisonville Sidewalk Cattlemen's Association hosts a steak dinner dance and a barbecue cook-off in May. Madisonville is on Texas 21, part of the historic El Camino Real route that ran from Natchitoches, La., to Mexico City. Lake Madison Park features a lakeside park, boat ramp, fishing, picnic areas and sports fields.
