The town grew under the protection of Fort Mason. Many buildings are constructed from the old fort's sandstone blocks. The Odeon Theater is the oldest continuously-operating movie theater in Texas. The area is noted for camping and hunting. Fishing in the Llano River is good year-round. Bluebonnets blanket the landscape in spring. Picturesque rock fences add to the scenic countryside.
