Meridian was established on July 4, 1854, as the seat of Bosque County. A log-cabin courthouse was the first structure erected in town. Today, it is a center for agriculture and maintains a small-town charm that's evident on the historic square, which features an 1886 Renaissance Revival-style courthouse with a clock tower.

The city hosts the annual National Championship Barbecue Cook-Off each October. Bed-and-breakfast accommodations are available in historic buildings.
