The town was established near an artesian well used by traders. It is in the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Main Street City.
Historic Mineola offers specialty shops and art galleries. Downtown offers a restaurants, and the Select Theater and Lake Country Playhouse, which offers first-run movies and live productions (903/569-2300). Bed-and-breakfast inns are available. The restored Depot houses the Railroad Museum and is an Amtrak Texas Eagle stop (800/USA-Rail). Festivals include Main Street Wine Fest, Bigfoot Meets NatureFest, Mays Days, MLOTA's Art Festival and Quilt Show, Ironhorse and Holiday of Lights.
