The town was named by a Caddo tribe attracted to the area by the mineral springs. This is a Texas Main Street City. The historic downtown district hosts specialty shops, tearooms, the Titus County Courthouse, the Titus County Veterans Memorial, Bell Tower and the Confederate Monument. Nearby West New Hope Methodist Church includes a mural inside painted by local artist David Freeman (903/524-2312). It is home to Northeast Texas Community College and the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts (www.ntcc.edu). Boating, fishing, camping and water skiing opportunities are found on nearby lakes.
