Vibrantly modern yet rich in Texas history, Plano retains evidence of its roots. The bronze longhorn sculptures that mark the Shawnee trail, graze astride the Shops of Legacy Town Center. The Baccus Cemetery, established in 1847, remains nestled among the modern restaurants on Bishop Boulevard. In 2002, Historic Downtown Plano was designated as a Heritage Resource District. Sidewalk markers denote significant buildings in the district, and special maps can lead visitors on a self-guided walking tour to discover the landmarks of Old Plano. Today, Plano is known as the Hot Air Balloon Capital of Texas for the Plano Balloon Festival held every September for almost four decades.
