This town was a stop on the Chisholm Trail. Today's visitors find shops, art galleries, antiques,, entertainment, historic lodging and the 27-hole Robert Trent Jones Jr. golf course. There are 20 sites with state or national historical markers, including Salado Creek, the first Texas Natural Landmark to be designated by the Texas Historical Survey Committee.

Salado's Visitor Center is in a restored 1850s-era log cabin and offers information on local attractions and events, such as the Scottish Gathering and Highland Games, Wildflower Art Show and the Annual Art Fair.
