Van is in eastern Van Zandt County at I-20 and F.M. 314. In 1894, Henry Vance established a post office here, and the name Van was chosen. On Oct. 14, 1929, oil was discovered here, and Van became a boom town. About 30 structures, including hotels, were built within 10 days. The Pure Oil Company, a major lease holder, pioneered a system of controlled drilling that drew international attention and ensured the longevity of the oil field and town. The city was incorporated in 1947. Today, Van continues to thrive as a community rich in history. Seven historical markers are within the city limits. Golfers can find a place to play nearby at the Garden Valley Golf Resort.
