Waco has long been known as the “Heart of Texas.” Named after the Waco Indian tribe and was the crossroads of Texas. The Chisholm and Shawnee Trails both came through the town. Today, Waco is a diverse, bustling city with a university, two colleges, many hotels and restaurants. Its downtown cultural district was recently recognized officially by the Texas Commission on the Arts. A scenic river walk meanders along the Brazos River. The historic Waco Hippodrome Theatre now offers first-run and classic films, and live entertainment (wacohippodrometheatre.com).
Annual events include the Homestead Labor Day Festival in September, and Waco Cultural Arts Festival and the Heart O' Texas Fair and Rodeo in October.
