Founded in 1849, and located just 90 miles from Dallas and Austin, Waco has long been known as the “Heart of Texas.” Named after the Waco Indian tribe, the town was founded in 1849 and served as a crossroads. The Chisholm and Shawnee Trails both passed through Waco on their way to northern cattle markets. Today, Waco is a diverse, bustling city with a university, two colleges, more than 40 hotels and 300-plus restaurants. Downtown is designated an official cultural district by the Texas Commission on the Arts. It is a popular destination with fans of hometown celebrities Chip and Joanna Gaines.

Annual events include Spring at the Silos in March, Margarita and Salsa Festival in August, Heart O’ Texas Fair & Rodeo in October and Homestead Heritage Thanksgiving Festival in November.
