The city's name comes from a Native American word meaning “buffalo creek." In the 1800s, the Shawnee Trail went through what is now the Historic Downtown District. Waxahachie has an abundance of Victorian-style homes with "gingerbread" trim, and several movies have been made featuring its old buildings and homes.
