Established in 1848, the picturesque village is now a resort and retirement area. It is characterized by cool, shady pools beneath towering cypress trees, cascades on the Blanco River, sparkling Cypress Creek, majestic hills and an abundance of white-tailed deer.

Recreational communities, bed-and-breakfasts, vacation resorts and youth camps dot the area. Climbing, hiking, swimming, golf, tennis, arts and crafts, and camping are popular activities. Many artists and writers make their homes here.

Market Days, the second largest in Texas, are held the first Saturday of March-December. They include more than 475 booths of arts and crafts and a flea market. At Lions Field on R.M. 2325.
