The national holiday that celebrates the end of slavery originated in this historic beach town of Galveston. The many festivities put on by different organizations include fireworks, a banquet, scholarship gala, parade and picnic, poetry festival, freedom tours (visitors go to the sites of emancipation where Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger read the historic General Order No. 3), a business summit, reenactments, and a festival culminating with the Juneteenth Jubilee.
