René Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, was a French explorer sent by King Louis XIV to sail across the ocean and land at the mouth of the Mississippi River, establish a colony and trade route, and locate Spanish silver mines. The plan was never completed, as La Salle lost ships to pirates, sailed past his destination and into Matagorda Bay, and was murdered by his own men. This re-enactment shows the landing along the Texas coast, and also includes a Fourth of July celebration with a flag-raising ceremony and fireworks. A parade, barbecue lunch, carnival, helicopter rides, and bingo are also featured.
