This exhibition examines prints and drawings from the Bridwell and DeGolyer Libraries at SMU, as well as from the Meadows’s own collection, that visualize female biblical figures, saints, and monastics. The show contextualizes these works against a historical backdrop in which the church and Spanish monarchy sought to protect social order by regulating women’s mobility, promoting their enclosure, and mandating their separation from the outside world.
