This Juneteenth Emancipation Day celebration honors the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Grainger rode into Galveston Bay and read the executive order proclaiming “all slaves are free.” The order came more than two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation of Jan. 1, 1863, granting freedom to all slaves in the Confederate states.
