This town was once named "Cotton Capital of the World" when it set the record for the most cotton bales compressed in a single day. The historic Main Street area has notable architecture as well as state and national historic landmarks. Greenville has antiques, shopping, restaurants, music venues and a winery. Historic sites include the Katy Depot, the Central Christian Church and the vaudeville-era Texan Theater. Audie Murphy, the nation's most decorated soldier of World War II, was born near Greenville.
