Known as "The Cradle of Texas," this town is on the El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail. Sam Houston had an office here; Davy Crockett was feted on his way to the Alamo; and James Pinckney Henderson, Texas' first governor, lived here. Visit antique stores and sample the grapefruit highball at San Augustine Drug. The restored Old Town Well–complete with sweetgum roller—is in the Old Stripling Drug Store. The store is now owned by the San Augustine County Historical Society. Events include the Texas Treasure Heritage Festival in April, a PRCA rodeo in May and the Sassafras Festival in October. The regional Sale on the Trail is held in May.
