This town was designated the "Cactus Capital of Texas" by the Texas Legislature. Before relocating to Langtry, it is said Judge Roy Bean settled here to start a saloon. Disliking competition, the local saloon owner poisoned Bean's whiskey barrels with kerosene, thus branding Sanderson as "the town too mean for Bean." Stories of its wild frontier beginnings are many, from the bank once robbed by the Wild Bunch to one of the last train robberies in Texas. Each April, U.S. 285 between Sanderson and Fort Stockton is closed for "the most challenging road race in the world"—Big Bend Open Road Race.
